Daily Design: Day 345
Daily Design is a series of game concepts devised daily through all of 2016. These are just basic concepts, designed based on randomly generated words. Today, they are;
Anticipation, Timer and Warping.
As such, the game I’ve designed today is…
Warp Drive is a multiplayer racing game about sci-fi cars that can teleport. This could understandably make racing less interesting for spectators, so it’s set to a timer – once this timer expires, the car (and everyone inside it) will immediately teleport a set distance along the race track.
This is partly a Mario Kart-esque catch up mechanic – players that are performing poorly will teleport forward more frequently, though not at such a rate that performing well is discouraged. Conversely, players that are in first place will teleport less frequently.
This timer can be manipulated by ramming other players, especially if it causes a significant wreck or knocks them off the course. Destroying another car in this way will extend their timer will reducing the attacking player’s, meaning that aggressive play is rewarded with track distance covered.
In other words, players can focus on ramming and destroying each other over direct racing and still come out on top. Otherwise it’s a fairly straightforward racing game, with local and online multiplayer.
That’s it! Thanks for reading. I’ll be back tomorrow with another quick game concept.
