Daily Design: Day 311

Daily Design is a series of game concepts devised daily through all of 2016. These are just basic concepts, designed based on randomly generated words. Today, they are;

Trigger, Reset and Freeway.

As such, the game I’ve designed today is…

Highway Hijinks


Highway Hijinks is a racing game in which players can use some kind of magic gun to “shoot” other cars and either speed them up or slow them down.

It’s otherwise a game with traditional racing rules – the first player to cross the finish line is the winner (or to do so after completing laps). A key difference is that the courses are extremely dangerous, requiring skilled handling and careful cornering to survive. Players that fall off or have a violent crash are permanently eliminated from the race.

While players can fire at any time, using the weapon will have the opposite effect on your own car. In other words, speed up an opponent will slow yourself down and vice versa.

Slowing an opponent down is obviously used to make it harder for them to win the race, but has the added benefit of speeding yourself up. Speeding an opponent up is costly, but used well can make it a lot more likely that they crash.

Finally, the “gun” can only be used on opponents that are ahead of the player.
