Daily Design: Day 308

Daily Design is a series of game concepts devised daily through all of 2016. These are just basic concepts, designed based on randomly generated words. Today, they are;

Coffee, Manage and Advance. 

As such, the game I’ve designed today is…

Caffeine Catastrophe


Caffeine Catastrophe is a game about drinking too much coffee, then regretting it immensely. I figure it’s something that many gamers can immediately relate to.

It’s a 2D side-scrolling game, where players are tasked with navigating through obstacles that are moving at extreme speeds. The protagonist can drink coffee to slow down the world around them, allowing them to bypass otherwise impossible obstacles.

The problem is that players have a limited amount of coffee to drink, and that if they drink too much at once then they’ll become unstable. Players can make their character drink coffee by holding down a button, then release it to stop. The key is to manage coffee carefully – drink enough to bypass tricky obstacles, but not so much that players lose control and faint, all while making sure they’re drinking enough to get through a problem and leaving enough for later troubles.

Otherwise, it’s a fairly standard platformer game. Players can jump, move about and kill enemies through the sheer powers of physics and body weight.

That’s it! Another short one, as I’m still not home, but at least this one wasn’t written on a phone. I’ll be back tomorrow with another quick game concept!
