Daily Design: Day 297

Daily Design is a series of game concepts devised daily through all of 2016. These are just basic concepts, designed based on randomly generated words. Today, they are;

Lighting, Block and Voltage.

As such, the game I’ve designed today is…

Fulguration

Fulguration is a game about killing things with light, which admittedly is an idea I’ve touched on more than once in this blog series. The difference is that this time, your character is the one that has to avoid light – instead, players navigate through areas by blocking light where they can.

The game is side-scrolling 2D, and broken down into several levels. The goal of each level is simply to reach an exit, though this has to be done without touching any source of light on the way.

So, just to clear this up, the player can see perfectly in the darkness. The “light” that they can’t touch is clearly defined and differently coloured from the rest of the level. Players can block this light by moving items, or shut the light off by finding the corresponding switch.

Not all light sources can be shut off easily, such as fires. These have to be navigated with care, or in some cases there may be ways to douse them. Another level may be set during a thunderstorm, where a flash of (deadly) lightning is proceeded by a crack of thunder. Players can avoid this by hiding in certain areas of the level.
