Daily Design: 246
Daily Design is a series of game concepts devised daily through all of 2016. These are just basic concepts, designed based on randomly generated words. Today, they are;
Ram, Death and Physics.
As such, the game I’ve designed today is…
Butt Heads is a multiplayer game about ramming each to death. Players play as rams, as one may expect.
Each game is short and brutal. Games take place on floating platforms – floating on everything from air, to water or even lava – and the goal is to knock all opposing players off the edge. There are up to four players at any time (with a minimum of two), and AI can be used as a stand-in for absent players (though it isn’t necessary).
The controls are dead simple – players can move in any direction with the analogue stick or WASD keys, and can start to charge with either a shoulder button or LMB, depending on the input method. Charging makes your rams much more powerful but also makes it harder to stop and impossible to steer. The idea is to balance charged rams with regular ones in an attempt to knock the opponent off.
Stages also come with unique environmental hazards. A water stage may have waves that come over the platform, or the platform itself may begin to tilt. Another stage may have sections that become coated in ice, and yet another may drop debris on the field that can be rammed into other players.
It’s a very simple idea, but one that’s easy to iterate. There are similar games in Mario Party that are also a blast, so given that the developer/s manages to create a solid enough control scheme and feedback system, it could be a blast.
That’s it! Thanks for reading. It’s come to my attention that I may have actually missed a day along the line somewhere – I’ve been using trusty Wikipedia to check what each day of the year is (ie. July 23rd is the 204th day of the year, hence Daily Design: Day 204) but, shockingly, it turns out we’re in a leap year. I don’t know what day I missed or how, but I’ll make up for it with a double post tomorrow!
