Daily Design: Day 191
Daily Design is a series of game concepts devised daily through all of 2016. These are just basic concepts, designed based on randomly generated words. Today, they are;
Caffeine, Pursuit and Function.
As such, the game I’ve designed today is…
Be Caffeinated is an endless runner, as well as an incidental advertisement for the benefits of caffeine.
The game functions like an ordinary endless runner, in which the player is constantly running towards the right-side of the screen to avoid night time, which is catching up from the left. If the player is overtaken by night they lose and the game is over.
Along the way the player has to jump, slide or punch their way through and past obstacles. Hitting an obstacle will slow the player down, often resulting in a lost game. Even if the player manages to avoid every obstacle, though, night time will eventually catch up with them.
To avoid this, players can pick up cups of coffee by colliding with them. Each cup of coffee will increase movement speed, which lets the player outrun night time more easily. The effect will slowly wear off over time. However, the effect is also cumulative, which means that picking up too many can easily result in the game becoming too fast for the player to react in time, causing them to (literally and figuratively) crash.
That’s it! Thanks for reading. I’ll be back tomorrow with another quick game concept.
