Daily Design: Day 154
Daily Design is a series of game concepts devised daily through all of 2016. These are just basic concepts, designed based on three randomly generated words. Today, they are;
Melt, Cure and Side.
As such, the game I’ve designed today is…
Cauterized is an endless runner in which the protagonist “cures” people of their zombie-ism by burning them to (re)death.
Players begin by running left to right, and the game only ends when they’re bitten by a zombie. The problem is that zombies are also coming from the left of screen, so stopping too long will also result in a bite.
When the screen is held (the game is primarily designed for mobile), the protagonist will stand still and fire his flamethrower. Zombies hit with the flamethrower will begin burning to death, which will happen faster if the flamethrower is kept on them, though they won’t stop walking towards the protagonist – if a flaming zombie (or a regular one) touches the character, the game is over.
The idea, then, is to balance the amount of time spent burning zombies with the amount of time staying still. Since players can’t move while burning they’re making themselves more vulnerable to the zombies coming from the left.
Every now and then, players are awarded with their choice of an upgrade. 3 are randomly selected from the upgrade pool and the player can pick one of those until they reach the next upgrade point after a certain distance. These upgrades range from flamethrower range increase to overall speed increase – not all are completely beneficial, so pick carefully! Especially since an upgrade must be selected.
That’s it! Thanks for reading. I’ll be back tomorrow with another quick game concept.
