Daily Design: Day 94

Daily Design is a series of game concepts devised daily through all of 2016. These are just basic concepts, designed based on three randomly generated words. Today, they are;

Popping, Beast and Mystic.

As such, the game I’ve designed today is…

Pop Culture


In Pop Culture, players take the role of a wizard tasked with eliminating tribes of creatures.

Played from a bird’s eye perspective, Pop Culture has players tap (or click) on monsters to pop them. If the player can pop all the monsters before a time limit expires, they clear the level.

For each creature killed, the player earns experience that can be spent to improve their abilities. This includes unlocking spells, such as:

Chain Lightning – When players tap a creature, this deals damage to all nearby monsters.

Necromancy – Killing a creature revives it as an undead soldier, which hunts down enemies for a short time.

Pop Rocks – When an enemy is popped, deal large damage to all enemies in a small radius. If this kills them, continue the chain reaction.

Abilities can also be upgraded, increasing flat damage, range, etc.

It’s a standard little phone/flash game, and not exactly new and inspiring, but history’s proved just how much fun these sorts of games can be. By slowly ramping up the mechanical complexity and enemy count, there’s a definite kind of simple pleasure in blowing things up.
